Sindh Transport Minister Awais Qadir Shah has said they won’t be resuming train operations for some time and called out Federal Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed for supporting the idea.
“We can’t allow passenger trains in Karachi. Sheikh Rasheed cares more for trains than human lives,” Shah said during a press conference on Sunday.
Shah was of the opinion that the coronavirus cases will spike more rapidly if people are permitted to travel via train. “[Coronavirus] cases may surge beyond the 100,000-mark if we allow people to travel via trains on Eid.”
Prime Minister Imran Khan is chairing a meeting with senior government officials in Islamabad to decide on the matter.
On Saturday, Rasheed had appealed to the PM to take a decision regarding the resumption of train services by Monday “before it’s too late”. “We have already made bookings of more than Rs2.4 billion. If we are not allowed, we will have to return the money to them,” Rasheed had said.
