Today’s outlook: PM heads to Lahore, Cynthia Ritchie to court

Here are some of the news stories we are following today (Saturday):

  • Prime Minister Imran Khan will head to Lahore where he will chair a meeting of the Punjab cabinet. The PM will be apprised on details of the provincial budget and the steps the government is taking to stem the coronavirus’ spread. He’ll also hold meetings with Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar and Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar.
  • The PPP has called an All Party Conference meeting in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to discuss the federal budget 2020-21.
  • Lahore has become a coronavirus epicentre with increasing infections being reported from the city every day. The Punjab government has recommended imposing a lockdown in Lahore for two weeks. PM Khan is expected to decide on the matter today.
  • An additional district and sessions court has summoned US blogger Cynthia Dawn Ritchie who had accused PPP leaders of sexually assaulting her. The court had also directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to submit a reply in the case.
  • The federal excise duty on cement has been reduced from Rs2 to Rs1.75 per kilogramme – the Rs0.25 reduction will accumulate to Rs12.5 for a 50kg cement bag.
  • Locally assembled double-cabin vehicles will be getting more expensive in Pakistan after the government imposed 7.5% Federal Excise Duty on them in Budget 2020-21. Their prices are likely to go up by Rs500,000.
