Pakistan was left shocked after PIA’s PK-8303 crashed in Karachi’s Model Colony last month. A Karachi resident has decided to pay tribute to the people who lost their lives.
Abdullah Malik has been planting trees across the city and has dedicated them to the 100 people who died in the crash. “So far, I have planted 30 trees, 66 are left now,” Malik said on SAMAA TV’s programme Naya Din on Tuesday.
“We have all been deeply affected by the crash and the lives lost in it,” Malik said. “Planting a tree for them will not only be equivalent to honouring them but will also always remind us of their presence,” he added.
Malik is a resident of Karachi’s Federal B Area. He says that he has planted these trees in his vicinity so that he can look after them himself and water them every day. “I can plant them in any part of the city, but I want to make sure they are looked after and tended to so that they can grow into big trees,” he said.
By profession, Malik runs a honey business and travels countrywide for this purpose. “When I compare other parts of the country with Karachi, I find the city to be a barren land,” he told Naya Din’s host Kiran Aftab.
“During the heatwave of 2018, we saw three members of the same family die,” the man regretted, adding that from that day onward he decided to plant trees across the metropolitan city. “I have specifically chosen to plant neem and fig trees because they are cool, have good growth and give shelter to people,” Malik explained.
He urged people to plant trees in their respective areas. “All you have to do is water them regularly, it doesn’t even require a lot of effort.” Planting a tree is just like keeping a pet. After a while, the tree can sense your presence and I have seen people talk to them, Malik remarked.
He emphasised that Islam also teaches the concept of charity and the easiest way to do that was through planting trees.
“Not only that, trees keep us cool and especially in this hot weather, planting trees will not only keep our houses cool but also our nerves,” he said, reiterating that it has health benefits as well.
