Pakistan’s head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq has said that performances and merit were taken into consideration before announcing the central contracts for players for the 2020-21 season.
“The central contracts should give some clarity to players over the next 12 months,” Misbah said while addressing the media via video conference. “Player performances and merit were strictly taken into consideration before finalising the names.”
He added that the other selectors are on board with the decisions he has made.
The former batsman said that the decision to not award central contracts to the pace trio of Mohammad Amir, Hassan Ali and Wahab Riaz was a tough one. “Hassan Ali has been suffering from a back injury since April and is undergoing rehabilitation and is unfit at the moment. The Pakistan Cricket Board will provide support to him as he makes his return. As far as Amir and Wahab are concerned, I still believe they can win matches for Pakistan and are our top bowlers in white-ball cricket. They will remain in our plans for selection.”
Misbah went on to say that veterans Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez, who also missed out on central contracts, would also be utilized for the side in the future.
“Whichever player fits in the side on the basis of their performances will be considered for selection in the squad.”
Misbah said that he had informed the senior cricketers who were excluded from the contract list beforehand via a telephone call.
