When Deepika Padukone was advised to wear a burqa

Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee once advised Deepika Padukone to wear a burqa for her bridal outfit fittings at his store, Hindustan Times reported.

“A few people from the Mumbai store [knew] because that’s where Deepika used to come secretly for her measurements and I was terrified that there would be press hanging somewhere there,” said Sabyasachi. He advised Deepika to come in a burqa, but Deepika said she would be spotted if she did.

The designer had six months and the first thing he needed was some sort of a code word to keep Deepika’s wedding a secret while travelling most of the time. Sabyasachi was afraid he wouldn’t be able to hide it surrounded by so many people at work so he came up with a name.

“Most people in my factory thought it was Naomi Campbell getting married to an Indian prince.” Naomi is a British supermodel who has walked the ramp in India with a number of Bollywood stars.

Deepika tied the knot with Ranveer Singh in 2018 in Italy. It was a private lavish affair attended by close family and friends.

Anushka Sharma’s bridal outfit was designed by Sabyasachi too. His lehengas and saris are worn by a number of celebrities at weddings and award shows.

Syed Jibran under fire for comments on Imran Abbas

Syed Jibran is receiving criticism for his frivolous comments on Imran Abbas’ post in which he called out content creators spreading misinformation.

“Alizeh, Saboor, Ushna, Urwa, chaar hogayen. I guess sharai quota pura hogaya tera,” Jibran said, referring to polygamy in Islam that allows a man to keep four wives at a time.

Jibran’s banter with writer Saji Gul didn’t sit well with a number of people, who called the two out for trivialising a serious problem.

On Saturday, Imran posted a photo that announced his marriage to Urwa Hocane, his fourth internet marriage since January 2021. He called it “shameful” to link him with women actors who are his friends and requested followers to unsubscribe from misleading YouTube channels and Facebook pages to give such bloggers a taste of their own medicine.

“Don’t these bloggers have anything else to do?” Imran wondered. “Or they think that I’ve got nothing else to do?”

Last week, Ushna Shah too shared a photo showing herself and Imran getting married. It was a screenshot taken from a YouTube video which was posted by Tellyexpress on March 18. Imran reshared her post and joked that the two had forgotten to tell each other about their marriage.

He has called for, however, an action against content creators spreading fake news this time.

Karachi man turns childhood hobby into a business

A young man in Karachi runs his own business of fixing foxy cars. Ubaid spends around six to eight months revamping an old foxy before he takes it out on the street. There he finds a buyer who buys it.

Ubaid does not get tired of repeating this long process. “I love foxy cars,” he said. “Whenever I see a foxy I get stuck and keep staring at it.”

The cars he creates are durable and fit for long journeys. “I have travelled the rural Sindh in this car,” said Ubaid, “and even took it to Islamabad and Murree with my family.”

As Ubaid grew up, he realized it was time to turn his obsession for collecting dinky cars into a business. “I told my father that this is my hobby and I want to convert this into a business,” he told Samaa TV.

He keeps an eye out for rusted and useless foxy cars which he can fix. “I even picked up a car from a garbage dumpsite,” he added, “it took me three days to get it out.”

Saudi minister defends volume limit on mosque loudspeakers

Saudi Arabia’s Islamic affairs minister on Monday defended a contentious order restricting the volume of mosque loudspeakers, saying it was prompted by complaints in the conservative Muslim nation about excessive noise.

In a major policy last week in a country home to the holiest Muslim sites, the Islamic affairs ministry said the speakers should be set at no more than one-third of their maximum volume.

The order, which also limited the use of loudspeakers mainly to issue the call to prayer rather than broadcasting full sermons, triggered a conservative backlash on social media.

Islamic Affairs Minister Abdullatif al-Sheikh said the order was in response to citizens’ complaints that the loud volume was causing disturbance to children as well as the elderly.

“Those who want to pray do not need to wait for… the imam’s” call to prayer, Sheikh said in a video published by state television.

“They should be at the mosque beforehand,” he added.

Several television channels also broadcast prayers and Quran recitals, Sheikh said, suggesting the loudspeakers served a limited purpose.

In a country home to tens of thousands of mosques, many welcomed the move to reduce the decibel levels.

But the decision also stirred resentment on social media, with a hashtag calling for the banning of loud music in restaurants and cafes gaining traction.

Sheikh said criticism of the policy was being spread by “enemies of the kingdom” who “want to stir public opinion”.

The policy follows de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s sweeping liberalisation drive, which has pushed a new era of openness in parallel with what observers call a de-emphasis on religion.

The young prince has eased social restrictions in the ultra-conservative kingdom, lifting decades-long bans on cinemas and women drivers while allowing gender-mixed music concerts and sporting extravaganzas.

The relaxed social norms have been welcomed by many Saudis, two-thirds of whom are under 30 while riling arch-conservatives.

Saudi Arabia has clipped the powers of its religious police, who once elicited widespread fear, chasing men and women out of malls to pray and berating anyone seen mingling with the opposite sex.

Prince Mohammed has promised a “moderate” Saudi Arabia as he attempts to break with its austere image, while simultaneously cracking down vigorously on dissent.

Over the past three years, the kingdom has arrested dozens of women activists, clerics, journalists as well as royal family members.

SHC tells Keejhar authorities to submit report on safety measures

Sindh High Court told Monday the management of Thatta’s Keenjhar lake to submit a report on the measures taken to ensure safety of tourists. The report has to be submitted by June 4.

The court was hearing a petition against a lack of proper safety measures, which have resulted in several drowning incidents.

The incharge failed to appear in court today. The petitioner, however, was told that authorities have already submitted a detailed report on safety measures. They have yet to submit a report on coronavirus SOPs, and the management has been told to do that.

The management temporarily closed down its boat service in August 2020 after 10 people of the same family from Karachi drowned in the lake. There were 14 passengers aboard when the boat overturned.

Keenjhar Boat Association member Rabnawaz had said then that the government does not provide them with any funds to improve the condition of the boats. “In 2003, 29 people in a similar accident,” he said.

Pakistan to build 15 wildlife conservation parks: PM Imran Khan

Pakistan will be able to produce 10,000 megawatts of environmentally friendly electricity through its Decade of Dams project, Prime Minister Imran Khan said.

Under the initiative, 10 dams will be built across the country in the next decade. “In 10 years, these dams will do things for Pakistan that should have been done 50 years back,” the premier said during a speech at WAPDA’s Debut Green Euro project.

WAPDA has issued Green Euro (Indus Bond) of Rs500 million for the financing of Diamer Bhasha and Mohmand Dams. The dams will produce water for the irrigation of 100,000 acres of land.

“We, as a country, fall behind when it comes to implementation,” he pointed out. “We always make grand plans but fail when it comes to working on them.”

It is time we start thinking about our future generations and work on long-term plans, the PM stressed. “Pakistan is very vulnerable to climate change.”

Our glaciers are melting because of global warming which puts water and food security in the country at risk. Since 2018, the government has planted one billion trees across Pakistan. By 2023, it plans to increase the number to 10 billion. “This will positively impact livelihoods of people, control pollution in cities, and benefit tourism.”

The prime minister revealed that the government’s upcoming plans include recharging wetlands, increasing the plantation of mangroves, and building 15 wildlife conservation parks.

“In the education sector, we are bringing a single national curriculum to prevent this social divide,” he said.

For the health sector, Pakistan has introduced the “revolutionary” health cards for all the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

Wealth creation, incentivising small industries, and livestock management are other things the government plans on working, PM Khan added.

Vaccination of Pakistanis above 18 to start on June 3

Coronavirus vaccination of Pakistanis above 18 years will start from June 3, NCOC chief Asad Umar confirmed Monday morning.

The decision was made at an NCOC meeting earlier, Umar said on Twitter. “With this step, the vaccination of all eligible age groups would be carried out.”

Their registration opened on May 26. People can register by sending their CNIC number to 1166.

More than seven million people across Pakistan have been vaccinated against the virus so far. On Saturday, the country set a new record of administering over 383,000 vaccines in a day, he tweeted on Sunday. “The number of registrants is also steadily increasing and 11.663 million people have registered.”

On May 29, the government opened walk-in vaccination for people above the age of 30 years.

Earlier this week, Pakistan received more than 100,000 doses of Pfizer. According to WHO, the Pfizer vaccine was provided to the country free of cost through COVAX, the WHO vaccine-sharing alliance.

It will be used in the government’s immunisation drive, along with the Sinopharm, Cansino, Sinovac, and Astrazeneca vaccines.

Argentina no longer hosting Copa America: CONMEBOL

The South American Football Confederation has announced that Argentina would not be hosting the Copa America, as the country endures a record coronavirus surge.

The South American football body, which last week stripped Colombia of co-hosting duties over deadly unrest, said it was considering other offers to hold the tournament.

“CONMEBOL informs that in view of the current circumstances it has decided to suspend the organization of the Copa America in Argentina,” the governing body tweeted. “CONMEBOL is evaluating the offer of other countries that showed interest in hosting the continental tournament.”

The Copa America was originally due to take place last year, but was postponed for 12 months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Officials are expected to meet on Monday to decide on the next move for hosting the tournament.

An Argentine poll published on Friday found that most respondents were against holding the tournament as the country experiences its worst phase of the pandemic so far.

Less than two weeks before the Copa America’s scheduled start, Argentina is under a nine-day lockdown and experiencing record daily infections.

The Fernandez administration was hoping that the lockdown that began on May 22 would flatten the curve of infections ahead of the sports event.

Argentina had presented its “strict protocol” to CONMEBOL to host the tournament in its entirety, which involved preparing additional stadiums.

On May 20 CONMEBOL rejected a plea by Colombia to further delay the June 13-July 10 tournament following a wave of protests and social unrest, coupled with an upsurge in Covid-19 cases.

It left Argentina as the sole host, but a survey conducted by pollsters Poliarquia among a representative sample of 1,274 city-dwelling adults, found that 70 percent believe the country should withdraw.

Only 20 percent believed the championship should continue on Argentine soil, and 10 percent were undecided.

12 men arrested for swimming in Hub River

The police arrested on Sunday 12 men for violating restrictions by swimming in the Hub River in Balochistan’s Lasbela.

A case has been registered against them under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The law empowers district administrations to issue orders in the public interest that may place a ban on an activity for a specific period of time.

The government imposed a ban on swimming in the river after incidents of people drowning increased. “Last week, an 18-year-old drowned in the river,” a police officer said.

Last year, five members of a family had drowned. They had gone there for a picnic.

Randeep Hooda removed as UN ambassador after sexist joke

Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda is being called out for sexism after an old video started to resurface showing him ridiculing politician Mayawati, Hindustan Times has reported.

“I think I will tell a very dirty joke,” Randeep says in the video and goes on to make derogatory remarks about Mayawati, the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.

The video, which is now being widely circulated on Twitter, is nine years old and many celebrities are calling Randeep out, including Richa Chadha.

“It’s a despicable joke,” said Richa. “It’s crass, tasteless, and sexist.”

She wondered why women are always asked to apologise for their men colleagues while they “pontificate on sexism”.

“Not holding my breath,” Richa remarked.

Randeep has been removed as the ambassador of Convention for the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals.

“The CMS Secretariat finds the comments made in the video to be offensive, and they do not reflect the values of the CMS Secretariat or the United Nations,” CMS said in a statement. “Mr. Hooda no longer serves as a CMS ambassador.”

This is not the first time a Bollywood actor has made sexist remarks. Amitabh Bachchan once called IMF Chief Economist Gita Gopinath “too beautiful to be an economist”. Karan Johar and Ranvir Singh have been criticised too for abusive comments in 2014 during a YouTube show with one of the highest viewerships.

Pakistan resumes classes for matric, inter students

Matriculation and intermediate classes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Balochistan, and Islamabad resumed today (Monday).

Students in areas with less than 5% Covid-19 infection rate are going back to schools and colleges. Classes will be held on alternate days with 50% attendance.

Education institutions have been instructed to ensure the implementation of the coronavirus SOPs.

The decision was taken after the National Command and Operation Centre announced it will ease coronavirus restrictions from May 30.

Last week, the government opened walk-in vaccination for teachers above the age of 18 years across the country. They are required to carry their employment letter along with their CNIC to get inoculated at any vaccination centre.

In Lahore, a vaccination centre dedicated to all teaching and non-teaching staff was inaugurated on Saturday. Sindh has decided to build centres in two schools of every district. Teachers have been told to get vaccinated in a week or else action will be taken against them.

Regular classes for other grades with resume after June 7. According to Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood, board exams this year will be held between June 29 and July 23.

No student will be passed without exams this year, he said. Cambridge O level exams will be held from July 26 to August 5.

According to NCOC, in the last 24 hours, 43 people across the country succumbed to the deadly virus, while 2,117 new cases were reported. Pakistan’s Covid-19 infection rate has been reported at 4.05%.

Imran Abbas enraged after fourth internet marriage

Imran Abbas has been hitched to a fellow actor by the internet for the fourth time but he is no longer laughing it off.

“After Alizeh Shah, Saboor, Ushna, now it’s Urwa [Hocane],” he said. “My fourth marriage since January 2021.”

Photo: Facebook/Imran Abbas

Last week, actor Ushna Shah shared a photo showing herself and Imran getting married. It was a screenshot taken from a YouTube video which was posted by Tellyexpress on March 18. Imran reshared her post and remarked that the two had forgotten to tell each other about their marriage.

The photo, which clearly looked doctored, was taken from actors Minal Khan Aiman Muneeb’s wedding in 2018. Imran even joked the YouTubers could have done a better job at photoshopping their faces. But he won’t take it anymore.

“Don’t these bloggers have anything else to do?” Imran said. “Or they think that I’ve got nothing else to do?”

He has called it “shameful” to link him with women actors who are his friends and requested followers to unsubscribe from misleading YouTube channels and Facebook pages to give such bloggers a taste of their own medicine.

Under Section 20 (Offences against dignity of a natural person) of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Acts 2016, anyone who publicly spreads false information to intimidate a person or harm their reputation or privacy may face imprisonment for a year, which may extend to three, or a fine of Rs1 million, or both.

It has been criticised, however, for its vague wording and several activists and lawyers have called for its omission, arguing that it may be misused to settle scores or silence individuals speaking out against crimes, especially sexual harassment.

Four cases of Indian coronavirus variant reported in Sindh: Qasim Soomro

Four confirmed cases of a coronavirus variant first identified in India have been reported in Sindh, Parliamentary Secretary on Health Qasim Soomro revealed Monday.

“All the patients have been quarantined in Karachi and contact tracing has begun,” he said on SAMAA TV programme Naya Din. “They came back to Pakistan from multiple Gulf countries and tested positive at the airport.”

Soomro confirmed that the patients were doing fine.

In Sindh, we took samples of over 50 coronavirus patients and found out that 75% of people tested positive for the South African variant. The remaining were UK, Brazilian and other strains.

“People have criticised the Sindh government’s lockdown in the province but we are only doing this to protect ourselves from a catastrophe,” the secretary remarked.

Soomro stressed the importance of getting vaccinated as soon as possible. “We are going to remote areas in Sindh and are launching mobile vaccination centres so that everyone can be inoculated.”

He advised people to go on a social media detox. “All these rumours about the vaccines are false and people should not believe them.”

Criticising the government, the secretary pointed out that the government has been incompetent in curbing the spread of the virus. “It is giving mixed signals to people.”

On Friday, the health ministry confirmed the first Indian variant case in Pakistan. It said that one case of the Indian variant and seven of the South African variant were found in samples collected three weeks ago.

Pakistan had placed a travel ban on April 20 on all incoming passengers from India over fears of the “double mutant” coronavirus variant.

The coronavirus variant first detected in India has now been officially recorded in 53 territories, a World Health Organisation report said last week.

Two killed, 20 injured in US mass shooting

Two people were killed and at least 20 wounded early Sunday when three shooters fired indiscriminately into a crowd outside a concert in the Miami area, police said, the latest shooting in a year that has seen a surge in both gun sales and gun violence.

The shots erupted near a banquet and events hall in a strip mall in Miami Gardens, a heavily Cuban community of working-class families.

Angelica Green told reporters at the scene that her son and nephew, both 24, were among those wounded in the shooting in the wee hours of Sunday. Both were in hospital recovering, though the nephew, hit four times, was in more serious condition.

She had spoken to her son, who was “frantic” when he called right after the shooting. “They say that some guys came out with hoodies and ski masks and just started spraying at the crowd,” she said, adding that it was “very scary.”

The venue was “hosting a scheduled event and several patrons were standing outside,” Miami-Dade Police Department said in a statement.

When a Nissan Pathfinder SUV approached the scene, police added, “three subjects exited the vehicle and began shooting indiscriminately into the crowd.”

The trio fled. Their motive was unknown.

On Sunday, about a dozen small yellow cones could be seen on the street outside the hall, marking where bullet casings and evidence were found.

In addition to the two people killed at the scene, at least 20 people were hospitalized, one in critical condition, police said.

In a tweet, the department’s director, Alfredo Ramirez III, condemned the “cowardly act of gun violence.”

“These are cold-blooded murderers that shot indiscriminately into a crowd, and we will seek justice,” he said.

Police were seeking help from the community in finding the shooters.

Chad Harris’s 19-year-old daughter was among those wounded.

“My daughter ended up getting shot in the middle of this,” Harris said, according to CBS News. “Words cannot express how I feel right now. It’s a sad moment.”

43,000 gun-related deaths

Florida remains marked by the 2016 shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, in which a gunman killed 49 people, many of them young Cuban-Americans.

Over the past year, gun-related homicides have surged nationwide.

On Wednesday, a public transit worker shot dead nine people at a California rail yard before turning his gun on himself.

A search this week of the shooter’s home — which was set ablaze shortly before the attack — turned up 12 guns, some 22,000 rounds of ammunition and suspected Molotov cocktails.

That followed recent mass shootings in Indiana, California, Colorado and Georgia.

While the coronavirus pandemic slowed workplace violence as more people stayed home, it also saw record gun sales.

In March last year, the number of weekly federal background checks on gun buyers surpassed one million for the first time, The New York Times reported. Then, this spring, the number hit 1.2 million one week, with many sales going to first-time owners.

The United States has a long, painful history of gun violence — a problem President Joe Biden has branded an “epidemic.”

There were more than 43,000 gun-related deaths in the country last year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

Miami Police Chief Art Acevedo issued an impassioned plea Sunday for action.

“If we don’t fully mobilize as a society against it,” he said on Twitter, “it will get worse before it gets better.”

After 228 years, Louvre museum to be headed by woman

After 228 years, Louvre museum to be headed by woman

The French presidency has appointed Laurence des Cars, the current director of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, to head the world’s largest museum as of September 1, the Élysée Palace announced on Wednesday.

Des Cars, 54, was tapped to replace the Louvre’s outgoing director Jean-Luc Martinez, who had been in charge since 2013.

Her appointment caps a remarkable rise to the helm of France’s flagship museum, just four years after she became the first woman to head the nearby Musée d’Orsay.

The directors of France’s top public museums, which also include the Chateau de Versailles and the Pompidou Modern Art Museum, are directly appointed by French presidents.

An art historian and specialist of the 19th and 20th centuries, des Cars won plaudits for her efforts to expand the Musée d’Orsay’s exhibition rooms and introduce greater diversity in its shows.

The 2019 exhibit “Black models: From Gericault to Matisse”, which focused on the “forgotten” black models who inspired France’s artistic avant-gardes, won critical acclaim and is regarded as a highlight of her tenure.

Through their programming, “museums must remain in touch with societal debates, and thereby reach out to new generations,” des Cars told AFP in a recent interview.

Earlier this year, the Musée d’Orsay director successfully pushed for a Gustav Klimt painting in the museum’s collections to be returned to the heirs of a Jewish family that was forced to sell it by the Nazis in 1938.

When des Cars took over at Orsay in 2017, she was only the second woman curator to head a major Paris museum, alongside Sophie Makariou at the Musée Guimet.

She is now set to become the first female director of the world’s most visited museum since it was founded in 1793 during the French Revolution.

Des Cars will be taking over at a difficult time for the Louvre, which saw visitor numbers plummet in 2020 due to successive Covid-19 lockdowns, just two years after it set an all-time record of more than 10 million visitors over 12 months.

Israel FM in Egypt for Gaza ‘permanent ceasefire’

Israeli foreign minister Gabi Ashkenazi arrived in Cairo Sunday to discuss with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry the establishment of a “permanent ceasefire” between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers.

Ashkenazi tweeted in Arabic, English, and Hebrew that his Cairo trip is “the first formal visit of an Israeli FM in 13 years”.

“We will discuss establishing a permanent ceasefire with Hamas, a mechanism for providing humanitarian aid, and the reconstruction of Gaza with a pivotal role played by the international community,” he added.

Egypt played a pivotal role in brokering a ceasefire earlier this month between the Israelis and Gaza’s Palestinian Islamist rulers Hamas, bringing an end to 11 days of fighting.

Senior Egyptian security officials confirmed to AFP Sunday that Hamas’s leader Ismail Haniyeh would also be in Cairo for discussions but would not provide further details.

Concurrently, Egypt’s intelligence chief Abbas Kamel leading a high-level security delegation is expected in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, the officials added.

“President (Abdel Fattah) al-Sisi instructed the general intelligence chief to discuss with the Israeli Prime Minister (Benjamin Netanyahu) and concerned authorities the fixing of a permanent ceasefire and the latest developments on the Palestinian front,” they said.

Sisi, who has restored his country’s role as a regional heavyweight, also tasked Kamel with ending political divisions between rivals Hamas in Gaza and Fatah in the West Bank, the officials said.

Palestinians have been politically divided between Hamas and its Fatah, but analysts say the latest escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has served to unite the geographically fragmented Palestinian community in a way not seen in years.

The flare-up was the result of increased tensions in Jerusalem, including over Israeli security forces cracking down on Palestinians inside the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, Islam’s third holiest site, which is also revered by Jews as the Temple Mount.

Israeli strikes on Gaza killed 254 Palestinians, including 66 children, health officials said.

Rockets and other fire from Gaza claimed 12 lives in Israel, including one child and an Arab-Israeli teenager, medics said.

Sisi has pledged $500 million to help reconstruction efforts in the densely populated enclave, which was pummelled by Israeli airstrikes.

Government revenues to cross Rs4 trillion this month: Shaukat Tareen

For the first time in the history of Pakistan, government revenues this month will cross Rs4 trillion, Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen said.

In a budget webinar on Sunday, he said that the pandemic pushed Pakistan’s economic growth rate to negative last year. “The government then introduced a fiscal stimulus by giving the poor money.”

A liquidity stimulus was given by the state bank to both big and small businesses. “The prime minister did a great job by introducing the construction package,” Tareen remarked.

“He [PM] realised that construction is one industry which doesn’t just bring in labour but also supports around 40 to 42 industries on its own.”

When construction was incentivised, the economy started to stabilise and the current account deficit curtailed, the minister pointed out. Economic growth started recovering this year as exports, agriculture, services sector and housing started to pick up.

When this happened, revenues increased. “We have seen a 3.94% increase in economic growth,” Tareen said.

But this is where we are now. What do we want in future? “It’s an inclusive and sustainable growth over a long period of time.”

The Economic Advisory Council is working on how this can be achieved and we will have answers soon, the minister promised.

No clearance: Sarfaraz, 10 others miss flight for Abu Dhabi

Quetta Gladiators captain Sarfaraz Ahmed is amongst 11 players and officials who failed to fly for Abu Dhabi on Sunday morning.

The development was confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in a press release.

As per the statement, 16 players and officials were due to fly in two commercial flights in the early hours of Sunday morning from Karachi and Lahore.

However, only five—which included Gladiators’ pacer Mohammad Hasnain—were allowed to go whereas Sarfaraz and all the members in Lahore returned to the hotel.

The PCB stated that they are looking to find other ways to send the player so that they can start the mandatory quarantine in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The development is a concerning one for the PCB who have not been able to release the schedule for the remaining matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2021.

Over seven million Pakistanis vaccinated against Covid-19: Asad Umar

More than seven million people across Pakistan have been vaccinated against the novel coronavirus, according to National Command and Operation Centre head Asad Umar.

On Saturday, the country set a new record of administering over 383,000 vaccines in a day, he tweeted on Sunday. “The number of registrants is also steadily increasing and 11.663 million people have registered.”

On May 29, the government opened walk-in vaccination for people above the age of 30 years. Pakistanis above 18 can register for the vaccine now as well.

Earlier this week, Pakistan received more than 100,000 doses of Pfizer. According to WHO, the Pfizer vaccine was provided to the country free of cost through COVAX, the WHO vaccine-sharing alliance.

It will be used in the government’s immunisation drive, along with the Sinopharm, Cansino, Sinovac and Astrazeneca vaccines.

In a media briefing on Sunday, Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid said that the administration of Pfizer will begin after it’s approved by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan. A meeting will be held in the upcoming week.

She said that presently, Sinovac is being injected to people in Punjab. Those going for their second dose are being administered Sinopharm. “Punjab has a stock of 1.4 million vaccines and over 350 centres.”

We have begun vaccination for all teaching and non-teaching staff in the province too, the health minister pointed out, urging people to get inoculated as soon as possible.

You will first have to register for the vaccine by sending your CNIC number to 1166.

In a meeting on Saturday, NCOC announced that Pakistan will begin easing coronavirus restrictions from May 30. It made the following decisions:

  • Provinces can start routine classes of 10th and 12th grades from May 31
  • Exams for 10th and 12th grades will be held from June 23 to July 29
  • Parks and swimming pools can be opened in districts with less than 5% positivity rate from May 30. But they can only accommodate 50% of their capacity
  • Covid-19 vaccination will be mandatory for tourists above 50 years from June 1. In the case of people above 30 years, it will be mandatory from July 1. They won’t be allowed to stay in hotels, guest houses without showing vaccination certificates
  • Arrivals from the UAE will have to submit a coronavirus-negative report from a reputed lab. They will be tested again upon arriving in Pakistan. Airlines bringing passengers with fake negative reports will be fined

Tuchel hails team ‘effort’ as Chelsea secure Champions League triumph

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has heaped praise on his team’s ‘effort’ after the London-based club won the Champions League for the second time, courtesy a goal from Kai Havertz, which was enough to secure a tense 1-0 victory over Manchester City in Saturday’s final in Porto, shattering Pep Guardiola’s dream of lifting the trophy for the third time.

Havertz rounded Ederson to score three minutes before half-time at the Estadio do Dragao and the Chelsea players ran to celebrate with the German.

Tuchel, full of energy on the touchline just like his opposite number, punched the air in celebration, and later jumped with joy on the pitch after Chelsea held on for victory in the second half after City lost distraught skipper Kevin De Bruyne to injury.

The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League, a huge 19 points behind champions City, but this, remarkably, was their third win over Guardiola’s side in six weeks.

They ended City’s hopes of a domestic treble when they triumphed in the FA Cup semi-finals in April and delayed their title celebrations with victory in Manchester.

Now, in a final watched by a limited crowd of just over 14,000 fans who created a raucous atmosphere, they have denied City the first Champions League crown they and Guardiola so crave.

“It was an incredibly tough fight, what a fight. Today they were determined to win this. We wanted to be the stone in their shoe,” Tuchel told BT Sport. “The effort was huge. We overcame some difficult moments and had a fantastic attitude to defending.”

City had to wait 13 years after being taken over by Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour just to get to the Champions League final.

They are now the eighth consecutive team to lose in their first appearance at this stage. The same misfortune befell Qatar-owned Paris Saint-Germain last year as well as Tottenham Hotspur when they were beaten by Liverpool in the last all-English final in 2019.

Chelsea also lost when they first got to the final, on penalties against Manchester United in Moscow in 2008.

They overcame the final hurdle by beating Bayern Munich in a shoot-out in 2012 and now they have their second European Cup to move level with Juventus, Benfica and Porto as well as another English side, Nottingham Forest.

Their transformation into one of Europe’s super clubs has been down to the riches of Roman Abramovich, their Russian oligarch owner who was in attendance in Portugal.

Mount ecstatic on ‘special occasion’

“It’s such a special occasion. At this moment in time, we’re the best team in the world. You can’t take that away from us,” said Mason Mount, who has been outstanding for the Stamford Bridge side this season.

Chelsea have been transformed since the appointment as coach in January of Tuchel, but City were still the favourites after their third Premier League title triumph in four seasons.

Feeding off the energy of the crowd in a stadium filled to a third of its capacity — all fans required negative Covid-19 tests to gain entry — both teams played with a level of intensity rarely seen in the last year of football in empty grounds.

Havertz’s marquee moment

City pressed high but struggled to trouble Edouard Mendy in the Chelsea goal, while at the other end Timo Werner should have done better than shoot straight at Ederson in the 14th minute.

Chelsea then suffered an injury blow as an emotional Thiago Silva was forced off hurt, Andreas Christensen taking the Brazilian’s place in central defence.

Yet it was they who opened the scoring in the 42nd minute, Mason Mount’s ball splitting the City defence, allowing Havertz—their marquee £71 million signing last summer — to go around the lunging Ederson and convert into an empty net.

City now needed to break down a Chelsea defence that has been exceptional under Tuchel.

But they lost De Bruyne just before the hour mark, the Belgian taken out in a collision with Antonio Ruediger that appeared to leave him concussed.

He came off in tears, and Guardiola instead turned to Sergio Aguero for the latter stages, but there was to be no glorious send-off as a City player for the Argentine, as a Riyad Mahrez shot sailed just over in the sixth minute of injury time.

A decade on from his last European Cup triumph, there was to be no third for Guardiola. He remains one adrift of the record for the coaches with most wins in the competition, held jointly by Bob Paisley, Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane.

Afghan lecturers among four dead as bomb hits bus: officials

At least four people including two university lecturers were killed and several others were wounded when a roadside bomb struck their bus north of the Afghan capital on Saturday, officials said.

The incident occurred when the bus they were travelling in was hit by an explosive planted on the road in the city of Charikar, capital of Parwan province, interior ministry spokesman Tareq Arian told reporters.

“Four people were killed and 11 were wounded,” Arian told reporters.

The ministry of higher education said at least two of the killed were lecturers at Al-Biruni University from the neighbouring province of Kapisa, adding that the wounded included the dean of the university and some students.

Abdullah Abdullah, who heads the country’s peace process, condemned the incident, which he called a “terrorist attack”.

No group has so far claimed the bombing, and the Taliban denied they were involved.

Violence has soared in recent weeks as government forces and the Taliban clash in near-daily battles across the rugged countryside, with the insurgents pressing on with their campaign to capture more territory as peace talks remain deadlocked.

The Taliban denied killing civilians, but roadside bombs planted to target security forces often end up doing just that.

The group has also been accused of killing prominent Afghans including journalists, judges, civil activists and politicians in a wave of targeted assassinations in Kabul and other cities.

Even as violence surges, the US military continues to withdraw its remaining 2,500 troops from the country.

Last month, President Joe Biden ordered the US military to complete the exit of all troops by September 11, which will wrap up US on-the-ground involvement in a war that began nearly 20 years ago following the September 11, 2001 attacks by Al-Qaeda.

PDM announces new protests across Pakistan

The Pakistan Democratic Party has announced a fresh wave of anti-government protests across the country starting July 4.

On Saturday, the opposition alliance met to discuss its future strategies. Talking to the media later in Islamabad, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that the first rally will be held in Swat.

On July 29, another demonstration will be held in Karachi. Rehman announced a “massive protest” in Islamabad on August 14 in solidarity with Kashmiris and Palestinians.

The JUI-F leader said that the PDM has rejected the government’s ordinance on electronic voting. The Election Commission of Pakistan should call a meeting of all political parties to take a unanimous decision on electoral reforms, he said.

A delegation of the opposition allowance will visit journalist Asad Toor’s residence as well. He was recently attacked by unknown men.

Responding to a question regarding PPP, Rehman said that the political party no longer a member of the alliance. “They can still contact the PDM leadership and apprise them about their intentions.”

Foreign T20 stars ready to light up PSL6

After a series of hiccups and obstacles, the Pakistan Super League – it seems – is back on track as foreign players are eager to get on the field to showcase their talent.

For the UAE-leg, the cash-rich T20 tournament has attracted some renowned names of T20 cricket such as Andre Russell, Johnson Charles, Fidel Edwards, Martin Guptill, Usman Khawaja and all-rounder James Faulkner.

Russell, who will be playing for Quetta Gladiators, said that he is looking forward to play under former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed.

“I still have very fond memories of my first PSL with Islamabad United,” said Russell as quoted in the press release. “I still have some great friendships from my PSL experiences and I am really looking forward to join my new teammates at Quetta Gladiators and play under Sarfaraz Ahmed.”

“I have no doubts that the Purple Force will turn the tide and make its fans proud,” he added.

Australia all-rounder James Faulkner, who will be making his maiden PSL appearance, said that he is looking forward to share his experience with the team.

“I am looking forward to my first appearance in the HBL Pakistan Super League,” said the 31-year-old. “Lahore Qalandars have a formidable squad with some outstanding Pakistan talent like Fakhar Zaman and Shaheen Shah Afridi.”

“The first 14 matches of this season again unearthed some extraordinary youngsters and I am really looking forward to rub shoulders with them, learn from them and share my experiences with them,” he added.

Australia top-order batsman Usman Khawaja, who is also making his first PSL appearance said that he is happy to represent his birth city Islamabad United in the league.

“The PSL 6 is continuing despite the hurdles and challenges it had to face recently, is an excellent news for fans and players alike,” he said. “These are extremely difficult times for so many and we understand things may not always run as smoothly as they normally do. But the event organisers have done a tremendous job to relocate the event and organise all the logistics in such a short time.”

“In this background, I am excited to be a part of this league, happy to represent my city of birth and look forward to playing my part in the success of this league,” he added. “It is saddening that the event couldn’t be hosted in Pakistan but hopefully I will get another opportunity to play amongst all the fans who have stuck with Pakistani cricket through thick and thin.”
