Mourinho admits Tottenham ‘lacked energy’ in Brighton defeat

Jose Mourinho admitted his ‘sad’ Tottenham flops ‘lacked energy’ after Leandro Trossard rocked their top-four challenge as the Brighton forward sealed a shock 1-0 win on Sunday.

Mourinho’s side were hoping to get back on track after losing to Liverpool on Thursday, but instead, they suffered a damaging second successive defeat.

Trossard netted in the first half at the Amex Stadium and, with Tottenham’s Harry Kane sidelined by injury, the visitors lacked the quality to salvage an equaliser.

Tottenham are languishing in sixth place, with just two wins in their last nine Premier League matches.

They trail six points behind fourth-placed Leicester, albeit with a game in hand, after only their second defeat in 10 away league games this season.

Mourinho conceded his players were feeling sorry for themselves and couldn’t find the drive to rescue a point.

“We didn’t start well. In the first half I felt the team was probably too sad with the goal conceded and the situation,” Mourinho said. “There was a lack of energy. In the last 25, 30 minutes they gave everything but of course with some limitations.

“The boys showed great spirit in the second half and showed they are suffering. They tried to fight against that sadness.”

The title bid that looked possible for Tottenham in December is fading fast as leaders Manchester City are now 11 points clear of the north Londoners.

A victory against seventh-placed Chelsea on Thursday is essential to halt Tottenham’s sudden decline away from the Champions League places.

“I have nothing negative to say about them. I leave the game with a good feeling about my boys because they tried hard in the second half,” Mourinho added.

Fourth-bottom Brighton moved seven points clear of the relegation zone after extending their unbeaten league run to three matches.

The Seagulls were the only team in the top four divisions in England without a home league victory this season, but they finally ended that dismal sequence at the 11th attempt.

Allow Arzoo Raja to live with ‘husband’, petitioner says

Arzoo Raja should be allowed to live with her husband and his family now that she had accepted Islam, a petition filed by Syed Ali Azhar in the Sindh High Court read.

In a hearing on Monday, Ali said that the Shariah law gave him permission to live with Raja. The 14-year-old appeared before the court as well.

Her father’s lawyer asked the court to give them time to submit a written response. Following this, the judge instructed the lawyer to submit the reply by the next hearing.

After the hearing, an argument took place between Raja’s family and Azhar. During the commotion, the teenager’s mother threw her shoes at the petitioner, and abuses were exchanged between them. The matter subsided after Raja’s lawyer intervened.

Arzoo’s parents, who are Christians, say that she was kidnapped from home, converted and married to Azhar. He claims she converted and married him of her own free will.

On October 31, 2020 the parents filed a petition with a Karachi judicial magistrate seeking Aarzoo’s protective custody. Her father, Raja Masih, filed an FIR on October 13, 2020 after Arzoo was kidnapped from her home. The police later found that she had been married off to Azhar, who presented a nikkahnama, free-will affidavit, and a Sanad-e-Islam certificate.

Arzoo’s parents said that she was forced into filing a petition in the Sindh High Court on October 27, 2020 in which she claimed that she married Ali of her free will and converted to Islam. On November 2, 2020 she was recovered on the orders of the Sindh High Court and sent to a shelter home. Her husband was arrested and remanded into police custody.

Arzoo later appeared before the high court and claimed she was 18, after which it formed a five-member board to determine her age. The board confirmed she is 14, after which the judges said that it is a child marriage.

On December 4, 2020, the court disposed of the case and said that Raja was free to meet whoever she wants to. “No one has been barred from meeting her,” the court said.

Karachi man arrested for planning brother’s murder: police

A man hired a contract killer to get his brother murdered in Karachi’s Pirabad, the police said on Monday.

SC halts Omar Sheikh’s release as it hears review petition

The Supreme Court has stopped the authorities from releasing Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, the man previously convicted of kidnapping Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl and facilitating his murder.

The Sindh government has been instructed to suspend his release orders. He was expected to be released on Tuesday.

The court has restricted the Sindh government from issuing an extension in his detention orders.

On January 28, the Supreme Court ordered Sheikh’s release. The White House said it was “outraged” by this decision. Following this, the Sindh and federal governments filed a review petition against the verdict. The court took them up on Monday.

The court was told that Sheikh has been in state custody for the last 10 months.

“We want to know if someone can be detained like this?” asked Justice Umar Ata Bandial.

Who was Daniel Pearl?

Pearl, 38, was the South Asia bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal when he was abducted in Karachi in January 2002 while researching links between militants in Pakistan and Richard C Reid, who is also known as the ‘shoe bomber’ for trying to detonate a shoe bomb while on a flight from Paris to Miami in 2001.

Pearl’s wife Mariane Pearl, a US national who was living in Karachi’s Zamzama, wrote a letter to the Artillery Maidan police on February 2, 2002, and said her husband disappeared on January 23, 2002. She said she received an email from the abductors saying that he has been abducted “in retaliation for the imprisonment of Pakistani men by the US government in Cuba and other complaints”.

A graphic video showing Pearl’s decapitation was delivered to the US consulate in Karachi nearly a month after he was kidnapped.

Back to school: Pakistan students return to classrooms after months

After vacations and remote learning for more than two months, students across Pakistan are going back to classrooms.

On Monday morning, hundreds of students, clad in uniforms, made their way towards their schools. Strict implementation of SOPs is being ensured at schools and temperatures of students are being checked at the entrance and social distancing is being practised.

Classrooms and halls at schools and colleges were sanitised before the students arrived. Hand sanitisers have been installed at multiple points inside the campuses as well.

In a meeting last month, the National Command and Operation Centre decided that classes for each grade will be held on alternate days three days a week and the student strength will be 50%.

Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood has said that the government will closely monitor coronavirus cases and close schools located in virus hotspots.

Students of classes nine to 12, O and A-levels resumed on January 18. Mahmood said that this was because these students had to sit for their board exams.

No student will be promoted without exams this year, he added.

Last week, the government also released the academic calendar for the year which gave the following schedule:

  • May 18 to 31: centralised examinations for classes V to VIII
  • June 1 to 15: in-house examinations for classes I, II, III, IV, VI, and VII
  • June 30: results for centralised exams)
  • July 1: results for in-house exams
  • August 2: new academic year begins

Pakistan schools and coronavirus

All educational institutions across the country were closed late February after coronavirus cases began to rise. They were reopened in phases starting September 15.

Universities, colleges, and classes IX and X resumed from September 15. Students from classes VI to VIII were called to schools from September 23 and the students enrolled below class VI started from September 30.

To compensate for the lost time, Pakistan’s educational institutions decided to remain open on Saturdays and not have winter vacations.

On November 23, after the second wave of coronavirus cases hit the country, the government announced that all educational institutions would close again from November 26.

Classes were taken online till December 24 and winter vacations started from December 25 and were supposed to last till January 10. The government said it would hold a meeting to review the decision to reopen schools on January 4.

The NCOC then decided that schools would reopen in phases with classes nine to 12 being the first to reopen on January 18.

Russian man hunts Kashmir markhor for $64,000

A Russian man hunted an eight-year-old Kashmir markhor in Gilgit-Baltistans Gahirat Gol on Saturday.

The markhor had 38-inch horns.

The hunted paid $64,000 to hunt Pakistan’s national animal as part of the country’s trophy hunting programme.

This was the third and final hunt of the season. Previously, two American hunters have killed two markhors in the region.

Markhor is protected by the local and international laws like the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. It can be found in Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, Kalash Valley, Hunza among other Northern parts of Pakistan.

Related: Animals won’t survive unless you put a value on them, says American who hunted markhor for $92,000

Although hunting the markhor is illegal in Pakistan, the government has introduced a scheme which makes the hunt legal. The scheme is known as trophy hunting.

A hunting trophy license is issued after a proper auction by Peshawar’s wildlife department. The highest bidder is then given a permit to hunt one markhor.

Annually, four hunting trophy licenses are issued for Markhor hunting and 80% of the money collected is distributed among the local community, whereas 20% is kept by the wildlife department.

Myanmar military declares one-year state of emergency

Myanmar’s military declared a one-year state of emergency on Monday, handing power to a former general after arresting civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior officials.

An announcement read out on military-owned Myawaddy TV said the move was needed to preserve the “stability” of the state, accusing the country’s election commission of failing to address “huge irregularities” in a November election.

Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s de facto leader, was detained in the early hours along with the president and other top politicians after weeks of tensions with the military over the allegations of vote-rigging.

“The UEC (election commission) failed to solve huge voter lists irregularities in the multiparty general election which was held on November 8th 2020,” said the statement signed by the new acting president Myint Swe, a former general who had been vice-president.

The statement accused “other party organisations” of “harming the stability of the state”.

“As the situation must be resolved according to the law, a state of emergency is declared.”

The statement said responsibility for “legislation, administration and judiciary” had been handed over to military commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing.

  • Schools and universities across Pakistan have reopened. Students will be called in on an alternate basis with 50% strength every day. Schools have been instructed to ensure SOPs are implemented thoroughly.
  • A PIA airplane will bring the first consignment of 500,000 coronavirus vaccines to Pakistan from Beijing. The vaccination campaign across the country will begin next week. The first batch will be administered to health workers.

  • The second Test match between Pakistan and South Africa will commence on February 4 at the cricket stadium in Rawalpindi. The national squad will begin training today.

Last week, Pakistan’s top court dismissed an appeal against a lower court’s decision to clear Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and three others over the killing, after nearly two decades in jail. The decision has outraged the United States and triggered a legal tug of war between the Sindh government — which kept the group behind bars using emergency powers — and courts.

Breno ecstatic as Palmeiras down Santos to win Copa Libertadores

Breno Lopes was over the moon after helping Palmeiras won their second Copa Libertadores title with a 1-0 victory in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.

Traditionally decided over two legs, for the second edition running the final — delayed two months by the Covid-19 pandemic — was played as a one-off contest, kicking off in sweltering heat and inside a largely empty ground.

Breno came on as a late substitute and planted a magnificent header beyond Santos goalkeeper John deep into stoppage time to settle a scrappy encounter and earn Palmeiras a spot in next month’s Club World Cup in Qatar.

“I can’t describe the emotion,” said Breno, calling it an “unforgettable day” as Palmeiras added to their 1999 triumph, when they overcame Colombia’s Deportivo Cali on penalties. “We wanted this title, I was rewarded with the goal and we’re the Libertadores champions.”

Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira, 42, became just the third European manager to win the tournament, emulating Portuguese countryman Jorge Jesus who masterminded Flamengo’s 2019 triumph. Croatia’s Mirko Jozic also won with Colo Colo in 1991.

Palmeiras will pocket $15 million in prize money after winning South America’s top club competition, with cash-strapped Santos earning $6 million as runners-up in what was just the third all-Brazilian final.

Palmeiras now face a Club World Cup semi-final on February 7 against either Tigres of Mexico or Asian champions Ulsan Hyundai before a potential final against European champions Bayern Munich.

Santos left with ‘no answer’

Santos, who last won the tournament a decade ago when a teenaged Neymar scored in the final, missed out on the opportunity to become the first Brazilian club to lift the trophy for a fourth time.

“We had no answer. It was the last shot,” said despondent Santos forward Marinho. “I’m sad not to bring this title home, but we fought until the end.”

Despite the ban on supporters from the iconic 80,000-capacity Maracana stadium, the site of one of the city’s coronavirus field hospitals, local authorities agreed to grant entry to a few thousand invitees.

Palmeiras, who held on to overcome River Plate in the semi-finals, were without the injured Gabriel Veron, the highly-rated 18-year-old linked to a number of Europe’s top clubs.

As for Sao Paulo rivals Santos, who won two of their three Libertadores titles with Pele in the side in the early 1960s, in Kaio Jorge, 19, they have one of the country’s most exciting young strikers.

With attacking flair in limited display in the first half, it wasn’t until Santos midfielder Diego Pituca’s speculative drive on 76 minutes that either team genuinely threatened.

Palmeiras keeper Weverton shovelled the strike away and a fizzing follow-up shot from Felipe Jonatan flashed narrowly wide.

Kaio Jorge then sent a tame overhead kick straight at Weverton, but with the game seemingly destined for extra time there was late drama after Santos coach Cuca was sent off for a touchline tussle with Marcos Rocha.

Santos briefly lost focus as the eight minutes of stoppage time initially allotted elapsed, and Breno peeled off his marker, hanging in the air to head in a deep right-wing cross from Rony to spark jubilant Palmeiras celebrations.

Political vendetta behind Sialkot property demolition, says PML-N

Tauheed Akhtar, PML-N member and former Sialkot mayor, has said that a property in the city was demolished because party leader Khawaja Asif’s son holds shares in it.

A three-story community centre was demolished Sunday on the Sialkot Development Authority’s (SDA) orders.

The building was located in a private housing scheme, in which Asif’s son holds a 20% stake.

Law enforcement officials escorted the heavy machinery used. Witnesses reported that bitter words were exchanged between the policemen and PML-N workers present.

According to SDA officials, the community centre illegally occupied 12 marlas (365 square yards) of cemetery and park land.

Last Sunday, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) demolished a part of Khokhar Palace, the home of former PML-N MPA Saiful Malook Khokhar in Johar Town, Lahore. In this operation, the rear wall of the house of Khokhar’s nephew, Tahir Javed, was also brought down. Some shops and temporary huts were also razed. No untoward incidents were reported during this operation. In December 2020, the LDA had announced that these buildings, occupying 45 kanals of land, were illegal and that action would be taken.

Serie A: Inter’s Stellini hails Eriksen following Benevento rout

Inter Milan’s stand-in coach Cristian Stellini lauded midfielder Cristian Eriksen following the sides 4-0 rout of Benevento in the Serie A on Saturday.

Eriksen, who scored a late winner in the Cup derby, set up the first goal in the seventh minute when his free-kick was turned into his own net by Improta. Martinez ended his six-match goal drought on 57 minutes with a left-footed strike into the bottom corner.

Achraf Hakimi had a goal ruled out for offside, but seconds later Benevento goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo’s dreadful pass was intercepted by Martinez, who set up Lukaku to score.

Substitute Alexis Sanchez served up the fourth for Lukaku with 12 minutes to go, bringing the striker’s tally to 14 league goals this season, one fewer than Serie A leading scorer Ronaldo.

“(Eriksen) is adapting very well to this new role,” said Inter assistant coach Cristian Stellini, standing in for Conte who is serving a two-match ban. “He’s working hard, now he has the opportunity to prove his worth.”

In Genoa, Ronaldo failed to score for the third consecutive league game, but Juventus continued their climb up the table.

The Portuguese striker has been criticised for breaking coronavirus rules with a visit to a mountain resort for his girlfriend’s birthday.

“Ronaldo always does his bit for the team and it’s not a problem if he doesn’t score,” said Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo.

Federico Chiesa opened the scoring on 20 minutes after a move involving all three Juventus forwards.

Alvaro Morata played a one-two with Ronaldo, before the Spaniard’s low cross was slotted in by Chiesa.

Claudio Ranieri’s Sampdoria came close to an equaliser, with Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny denying Fabio Quagliarella a goal against his former club on the eve of his 38th birthday.

Morata had a goal ruled out for offside on 56 minutes for Juve, who had to wait until injury time to score a second.

Ronaldo’s cross-field pass found the run of Juan Cuadrado who laid it on a plate for Ramsey to tap in his second league goal of the season.

“The attitude is right, we finish a positive January in which we have grown a lot, even if we could have killed off the game sooner,” said Juventus centre-back Giorgio Chiellini.

La Liga: Real left ‘sad’ after Levante defeat

Real Madrid interim coach David Bettoni has said that the side’s 2-1 defeat to Levante in the La Liga on Saturday left them disheartened.

Zinedine Zidane’s defending champions sit second in the table, seven points behind Atletico, who have two games in hand and face Cadiz on Sunday.

Militao was shown a red card in the ninth minute at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium, with his team already without their injured captain Sergio Ramos and Covid-stricken coach Zidane.

Marco Asensio gave Madrid the lead four minutes later but Jose Luis Morales equalised close to half-time before Roger Marti made up for missing a penalty by scoring the winner.

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman had admitted earlier on Saturday his team “have to be realistic” about their chances of overturning Atletico’s considerable lead in the table.

And with Real Madrid slipping up again, it may now take a seismic collapse for Atletico to miss out on repeating their incredible La Liga triumph in 2014.

“The team were sad in the dressing room,” said Zidane’s assistant David Bettoni, who took charge of the side. “But they still have the will to fight to the end.”

“You always have to fight, the season ends in May,” added goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. “It is true that Atletico continue to win and are up there. We have to win and hope that the others lose.”

It also leaves the Champions League as Real Madrid’s only obvious chance of a trophy this season after they lost in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals and went out to Alcoyano in the Copa del Rey.

Madrid face Atalanta next month in the Champions League’s last 16.

Militao was sent off for bringing down Levante’s Sergio Leon, who was darting towards goal when Militao cut across him on the edge of the penalty area.

But Madrid gave themselves a lead to hang onto shortly after when Asensio continued his recent resurgence by sprinting onto Toni Kroos’ brilliant through ball and finishing into the corner.

Levante were dangerous, though, and drew level before the interval as Jorge Miramon’s cross to the back post was expertly caught on the half-volley by Morales.

Vinicius Junior came on for Madrid in the second half but made the worst possible start by kicking away the leg of Carlos Clerc, who was shown by VAR to have had his right foot inside the area.

Courtois pushed away the penalty by Roger and with 11 men, Madrid might have seized the momentum.

Instead, their tired legs gave way and a well-worked short corner by Levante gave a clear sight of goal to Roger, who made amends by firing into the corner.

Sevilla moved up to third in the table, a point behind Real Madrid, by winning 2-0 away at Eibar.

Lucas Ocampos put Sevilla in front with a penalty after the in-form Youssef En-Nesyri took a tumble in the box, before Jordan Moreno slid in at the front post in the second half to seal victory.

Villarreal and Real Sociedad had to settle for a point each in their bids for the top four after drawing 1-1 but Valencia moved five points clear of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Elche.

Pakistan sends plane to China to acquire coronavirus vaccine

A Pakistan Air Force plane has left for China to acquire 500,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine for free.

The government’s National Command and Operation Centre confirmed this Sunday. It said that China had announced free vaccines for Pakistan.

The vaccine doses are expected to reach Pakistan Monday. These are being provided as part of the first phase, and will be administered to health workers.

The containers, cold boxes and dry ice required for the transportation has been provided by the PAF. The vaccine will be stored in the main cold storage facility of the government’s Expanded Programme on Immunisation cell. It will be sent to provinces from there.

Offices have been established at provincial and district levels to facilitate provision of the vaccines.

Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar said Saturday that Pakistan will receive 17 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from COVAX in the first half of 2021.

Pakistan will get about 6 million vaccines by March. Their delivery will start in February.

In the second phase, he said, people above the age of 65 years will be inoculated by the end of February.

Registration to receive the doses will start soon, according to Umar.

Lahore maid found dead, family accuses employers of murder, rape

A 12-year-old employed as a domestic worker at a house in Lahore’s Iqbal Town was found dead, the police said on Saturday.

Her family has accused the employers of raping and murdering her. According to the victim’s father, a resident of Sheikhupura, she had been working at the house for two months.

“In the last few weeks, every time I called the employers, they would not let me talk to my daughter and said she was working or gave some other excuse,” Abbas Ali said.

On January 27, Ali received a call from an unknown number asking him to take his daughter back home as she was not feeling well.

“When we reached there, my daughter was unconscious,” he said, adding that the 12-year-old was immediately moved to a hospital where the doctor declared her dead.

When the family went back to the employers, there was a lock on the house and their numbers were switched off.

Ali has registered an FIR at the Iqbal Town police station. A case has been registered under sections 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and 302 (murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The investigating officer said that a post-mortem examination of the girl has been conducted and details regarding the death will only be revealed after the reports come out.

The police are trying to arrest the perpetrators and further investigations are under way.

In July, the Federal Cabinet had approved a bill against the employment of children for domestic help across the country.

According to the new clause, any child under the age of 14 years can not be employed as domestic labour.

Fawad comments on match-winning performance in first South Africa Test

Pakistan batsman Fawad Alam said that his century played a key role in the side’s comfortable victory over South Africa in the first Test in Karachi.

The left-hander played a brilliant 109-run knock when the side were struggling at 33-4 at one stage of their first innings in reply to the Proteas’ 220 all-out. His knock helped Pakistan take the lead in the fixture and went on to win the game by seven wickets.

The 35-year-old, speaking after the match, said that the side needed long innings in order to stay in the game.

“It was an important hundred at that stage because the team needed it,” he said as quoted by Cricket Pakistan. “We were 36-4 so we needed to bat long in first innings so that the second innings is easy. Pressure is always there in international cricket, especially when playing as a comeback player, there’s pressure. Pitch had some double-bounce, and there were rough patches too, it wasn’t easy but we discussed indoors that you apply yourself, stay calm, go with the flow. Don’t think of the pitch, play how you know, and I thought to apply myself and I knew that if I stick around, I’ll score runs.”

Pakistan have an unassailable lead in the two-match series with the second game to be played on February 4 in Rawalpindi.

EU approves AstraZeneca jab as WHO warns against ‘vaccine nationalism’

The European Union on Friday approved the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus jab for use on all adults as the World Health Organization warned wealthy countries against “vaccine nationalism”, saying it will only prolong the pandemic.

Coronavirus outbreaks are raging around the globe with Covid-19 deaths nearing 2.2 million, and while some parts of the world are fighting over limited vaccine supplies, there are fears the less privileged will not get access for a long time.

The vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford became the third to get EU approval after Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, but it came under the shadow of a bitter diplomatic row with Britain over which countries will get the scarce doses currently available.

“I expect the company (AstraZeneca) to deliver the 400 million doses as agreed,” tweeted European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, as she announced the authorisation.

The British-Swedish firm has admitted it will only be able to deliver a fraction of the doses promised to the bloc in the short-term due to production problems, saying there is not enough to fulfill supply promises to both Britain and Europe.

The supply issue is a huge blow to Europe’s already stumbling vaccine rollout, setting it on a collision course with Britain, which left the bloc just weeks ago.

In a sign of the growing tensions, the EU on Friday released a redacted version of its contract with AstraZeneca, while announcing a mechanism that could allow it to deny the export of vaccines made on European soil.

But it backtracked on a threat to restrict exports to Northern Ireland after Britain voiced “grave concerns”.

‘Vaccine nationalism’

The EU-Britain tussle has highlighted the impact of shortages on ambitious mass vaccination programmes, even on wealthy nations, and fears are growing that the developed world is hogging doses, leaving poorer nations behind.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned Friday against “vaccine nationalism”, saying there was a “real danger that the very tools that could help to end the pandemic -– vaccines –- may exacerbate” global inequality.

Parts of Africa and Asia have only just started securing and rolling out vaccinations.

The global scramble for shots comes as more troubling data emerges on new variants of the coronavirus, which is known to have infected more than 101 million people worldwide.

The variants first detected in Britain, Brazil and South Africa are believed to be more contagious.

Scientists are concerned that the South African variant may elude some vaccines, a potential stumbling block in the global effort to defeat Covid-19 through mass inoculation.

New data on Thursday and Friday showed average effectiveness of 89 and 66 percent for shots from Novavax and Johnson & Johnson.

But while Novavax’s jab was highly effective against the British variant, both were less effective against the South African strain.

Pfizer and Moderna have said their vaccines are effective against the variants.

In a separate but closely watched scientific mission, WHO experts continued their investigation Saturday in Wuhan, China, where the coronavirus first emerged in late 2019, hoping to uncover more clues about the origins of the pandemic.

They visited Jinyintan hospital, which received the first patients officially diagnosed with Covid-19.

Australian Open boost

With vaccine rollouts still in their early stages, movement restrictions remain among the few options for governments to try to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Surges across continents have overwhelmed healthcare systems even in rich countries like Britain and the United States, while Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi warned that hospitals across southern Africa were “rapidly reaching the limit of their capacities”.

Citing concerns over the new strains, Germany on Friday said it would ban travel from countries where the new variants are prevalent starting this weekend, while Canada announced hotel quarantine for all new arrivals.

France has announced the closure of its borders to all non-EU travelers except for essential travel.

The pandemic has shredded the international sports calendar, with doubts growing about the already delayed Tokyo Olympics.

But there was some good news out of Australia, which has largely kept its outbreak in control because of aggressive travel restrictions.

Australian Open organisers said Saturday that between 25,000 and 30,000 tennis fans will be allowed to watch the season’s opening Grand Slam.

Islamabad’s NUML to hold online exams following student protests

The National University of Modern Languages has decided to give in to the demand of its protesting students and agreed to hold online examinations for the Fall semester.

According to a notification issued by NUML’s management, exams of the MS and MPhil programmes will be taken on campus while the rest of them will be conducted online.

Students who have their exams from February 1 and are facing connectivity issues at home will be allowed to sit for them on the campus and will be provided internet, it read.

Related: Resume on-campus classes then take physical exams, NUML students demand

The decision was taken after students of the varsity took to the streets protesting against in-person exams. They said if classes were taken online, so their exams should be online too.

After discussing the matter with students, the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and the education ministry, NUML made the decision in favor of students.

Student protests in Pakistan

Students across Pakistan have taken to the streets in protest of the universities’ decision of holding physical exams for Fall semester 2020-2021.

They have demanded that their exams should be held online since their classes were online the entire semester. “The learning management system was not working most of the time and the quality of our classes was very bad,” one of the protesters complained.

The students have demanded that the exams should either be taken online or universities should postpone the finals.

“Give us classes on campus for two months and then take the exams,” they said, adding that otherwise, they will continue their protests. Following this, #StudentsWantOnlineExams started trending on Twitter.

Protests sprung up in other parts of the country such as Bahawalpur, Multan, and Dera Ghazi Khan as well. Following this, a number of varsities such as the University of Management and Technology and the University of Peshawar reverted their decision and postponed the exams.

The management of the universities had earlier said that as the government was reopening universities from February 1, they might as well take exams on campus.

Earlier this week, Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood said the Higher Education Commission will consult varsities on the matter but the final decision rests in the managements’ hands.

The HEC does not have any authority over the academic decisions made by the varsities, Punjab Minister for Higher Education Raja Yasir told SAMAA TV. “The HEC only advises them when they consult the body.”

He condemned the action taken by the students. “This way anyone will come onto the streets and blackmail the authorities to make decisions in their favour.”

Yasir added that the varsities should talk to students and reach a decision that is acceptable for both the students and the management.

Premier League: Klopp satisfied as Liverpool end winless streak

Liverpool registered a 3-1 away win at Tottenham to end a five-game winless run in the Premier League on Thursday.

The English champions had not even scored in their last four league games, but Jurgen Klopp said he recognised his side again as their front three sparked back into life after Roberto Firmino ended a 492-minute goalless drought in first-half stoppage time.

Kane had soldiered on after twice receiving treatment on ankle knocks in the first-half and was eventually replaced at the break with Jose Mourinho predicting the England captain will be absent for at least a few weeks.

“Two injuries in both ankles, the second one worst than the first one,” said Mourinho.  “A few weeks, I don’t know for sure. There are some players you can’t replace. When it happens it happens, but I believe we have to fight against it, we cannot do anything else.”

Liverpool’s worst run in the league since 2017 had seen them slip from the top of the table to fifth before kick-off with Klopp admitting his first priority is now to secure Champions League qualification for next season.

But the German was delighted with the response from the Reds as they clicked back into gear, particularly after going in front.

“What I saw today it’s not about shape or form it’s about who we are,” he said. “That was us, second half especially it was us. Tonight we knocked a wall down – that’s good. It is easier to lose (confidence) that’s how it is, but it is possible to get it back as well. It is not a light you can switch on and off. You have to show it in the right moment.”

A return to the Champions League is also Spurs’ target in Mourinho’s first full season in charge, but Tottenham’s chances may now depend on how long Kane is sidelined.

Kane and Son Heung-min have been the most deadly duo in the Premier League this season and thought they had combined for the opening goal inside the first five minutes.

Son finished coolly from Kane’s through ball, but the South Korean had just strayed offside in the build-up and the goal was ruled out by a VAR review.

There were signs of life in Liverpool’s attacking play despite a 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday and they created many more clear-cut chances than in recent weeks as Hugo Lloris twice denied Mane with excellent saves.

With Kane clearly hobbling, Tottenham were clinging on for half-time when Liverpool finally struck.

Sadio Mane got in behind and squared for Firmino to bundle in at the back post for his first goal in eight games.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s drop off in form has been another major part of Liverpool’s regression from the side that romped to the title last season with 99 points.

However, the England right-back connected sweetly to drill in his side’s second after Lloris could only parry Mane’s initial effort into his path.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s brilliant strike from outside the box halved the deficit just two minutes later.

Liverpool, though, rarely looked troubled after Kane departed and could have won far more convincingly.

Mohamed Salah’s powerful strike was ruled out after a VAR review for a handball by Firmino earlier in the move.

But Mane restored the two-goal cushion when he pounced on an error from Joe Rodon to fire high past Lloris.

Victory takes Liverpool back above West Ham, who they face on Sunday, into fourth.

Tottenham’s early season form saw them being touted as contenders for a first top-flight title in 60 years ahead of their last clash with Liverpool last month. Now a run of just two wins in eight games has plummeted Mourinho’s men down to sixth, four points adrift of the top four.

World COVID-19 cases cross 100m

More than 100 million Covid-19 cases have now been recorded worldwide, according to an AFP tally on Tuesday.

The number of cases, compiled from data provided by national health agencies, represents just a fraction of the real infections as the coronavirus has spread around the globe.

In the United States newly-inaugurated President Joe Biden pledged to ramp up the country’s struggling vaccine program.

The US, which passed 25 million confirmed cases last weekend, remains the country with the largest outbreak–and the largest death toll of over 420,000.

Biden is seeking to turn around the fight against the virus, which took a ferocious grip on the country during Donald Trump’s presidency when the risks were downplayed and officials gave mixed messages on mask-wearing other safety measures.

Biden said vaccinating the entire US population was a daunting challenge, and the program inherited from the Trump administration “was in worse shape than we anticipated or expected.”

“This is a war-time undertaking. It’s not hyperbole,” he said, announcing the US was buying an additional 200 million doses and will have enough to vaccinate 300 million Americans–virtually the entire population–by early fall.

Britain first Europe country to surpass 100,000 deaths

In another day of grim milestones, Britain surged past 100,000 Covid-19 deaths, and other European nations looked to tighten their borders, hoping to keep out new, more transmissible virus strains.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it was “hard to compute” the loss felt by British families after his country became the first European country to surpass 100,000 Covid-19 deaths.

But he said his government, which faced criticism over its initial response to the outbreak, “did everything that we could to minimize suffering and minimize loss of life.”

According to the London Times, the UK government will announce Wednesday that British travellers must quarantine in hotels near airports for 10 days after returning from 30 high-risk countries, mostly in South America and Southern Africa.

Neighboring Ireland said Tuesday it would enact mandatory travel quarantines for the first time, as well extending its third national lockdown until March 5.

Among other European nations looking to strengthen border controls was Germany, which said it is considering almost completely halting flights into the country.

“The danger from the numerous virus mutations forces us to consider drastic measures,” Interior Minister Horst Seehofer told the Bild newspaper.

Iceland meanwhile started to issue vaccination certificates to ease travel for those who have had both required doses.

The new measures came as anger rises over grinding anti-coronavirus restrictions, with the Netherlands rocked by nightly riots since it imposed a curfew on Saturday.

More than 400 people were arrested after the worst unrest to hit the country in four decades, but the Dutch government said it would not back down.

“You don’t capitulate to people who smash shop windows,” Dutch Finance Minister Wopke Hoekstra said, calling the rioters “scum.”

Israeli police also clashed with protesters, arresting 14 people after ultra-Orthodox Jews demonstrated against lockdown measures.

‘Vaccine nationalism’

With the global death toll at 2.1 million, the world has looked to vaccines to break the gloom, but bickering over access to doses has intensified.

Tensions have in particular mounted between the European Union and pharmaceutical firms over delays to deliveries.

“Europe invested billions to help develop the world’s first Covid-19 vaccines,” EU chief Ursula von der Leyen told the virtual World Economic Forum (WEF). “And now, the companies must deliver. They must honor their obligations.”

Europe’s vaccination campaign stumbled after British-Swedish drugs company AstraZeneca warned it would not be able to meet promised targets on EU shipments–a week after US group Pfizer said it was also delaying delivery volumes.

AstraZeneca’s CEO insisted Tuesday that the company was not selling vaccines ordered by the EU to other countries at a profit.

The widening gap for vaccine supplies between rich and poor countries led both South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and World Health Organization chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to lash out at “vaccine nationalism.”

Ramaphosa told the WEF that low- and middle-income countries were being shouldered aside by wealthier nations able to acquire “up to four times what their population needs.”

The row over access to vaccines at the WEF, normally held at the Swiss ski resort of Davos, comes as the pandemic compounds economic inequality.

Despite Lebanon being under one of the world’s strictest lockdowns, father-of-six Omar Qarhani told AFP he was still selling vegetables on the side of a road in Tripoli because he is desperate to support his family.

“I’m not scared of corona–what scares me is being in need and poverty,” he said.

NCOC confirms resuming primary classes, universities from Feb 1

The National Command and Operation Centre has backed the education ministry’s decision to reopen primary classes and universities from February 1.

On January 18, classes nine to 12 resumed across the country. Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood had said that in-person classes of primary grades and varsities would reopen in February.

In a meeting on Monday, the NCOC approved the decision. Only 50% of students will be allowed to take classes in a day in four major cities — Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Hyderabad, it said.

The forum has decided to reopen the education sector with directives of alternate classes three days a week.

In a press conference earlier this month, Mahmood said the government will closely monitor coronavirus cases and close schools located in virus hotspots.

On the other hand, Federal Minister for Planning Asad Umar has assured that a system for vaccinations is being put in place.

“Hundreds of vaccination centres in the country will be administering the COVID vaccine. Inshallah, the vaccination of front line health workers will start next week.”

The countrywide tally of active COVID-19 cases reached on Wednesday 33,820 with 1,563 more people testing positive for the virus. According to NCOC statistics, 74 deaths were reported on Wednesday of which the majority were from Punjab followed by Sindh.

Primary and higher classes were to be opened on February 1.
